繼adobe、微軟、firefox之後，google也終於推出了自己的離線程序設計環境：google gears。這是一個可以讓web程序離線儲存數據，並且離線運行的環境。比如或許gmail以後可以上線後將郵件下載到本地，離線，回覆後再上線統一發送。這樣的環境讓web程序邁出了新的一步，桌面與web終將融合。
而第一個應用gears技術的將是google自家的google reader。google會爲其配備一個一個綠色的“下載到本地”按鈕，點擊後就能將當前未讀的feed下載到本地，之後不管你離線還是什麼的，均能隨意閱讀你的feed了。
google gears提供了三個模塊：一個本地服務器，用來存儲和讀取離線程序；一個小型數據庫，用來儲存本地數據；一個工作池，用來讓開發者將本地數據與服務器端同步。
