A new report into the UK mi area name sector has stated that organisations now acknowledge the benefits of using a generic mi area name to achieve hits from targeted customers.
The research from Nominet, reported on Sedo.com, found that 65 per cent of all mi area names registered in the last five years have been of the generic top level type.
It suggested this is more evidence to suggest that those outside the industry are increasingly aware of how valuable an internet presence can be.
Sedo's director of operations in the UK, Nora Nanayakkara, said: "It is vital for UK businesses to ensure they have the best possible online address."
The report also listed the year's top five .co.uk published sales, which was led by Recycle.co.uk (£150,000), Ink.co.uk (£130,425), Phones.co.uk (£120,000), Fly.co.uk (£87,500) and Connected.co.uk (£80,000).
Meanwhile, the Times recently covered the case of Jake Winebaum, who bought Business.com for $7.5 million in 1999.
He then built the site into a successful business-to-business portal and went on to sell the network for $345 million.

A generically named online dating service has announced a deal with one of the world's
premier social networking sites, it has emerged.
According to industry news website DM News, Match.com is to enter into a deal with Facebook
that will see the website significantly boost its generic brand name with a Little Black
Book application.
The website reports that Match.com will offer Facebook users the chance to arrange
encounters with friends and potential matches based on their shared interests and
compatibility.
Commenting on the new application Robbie Waeschenfelder, manager of marketing at Match.com
said that the move was a great opportunity for the company to build on its current base of
users.
"Social Networking is a great opportunity to reconnect with people that you used to know
and old family members, and it presents a great opportunity for singles to meet people
through friends," he said.
Match.com offers a range of online dating services and has done so since its establishment
in 1995.

Ninetowns (NINE), one of the largest import and export software service providers in China, says that it is planning to spend more money to expand its Internet resources.

In May this year, it acquired e-commerce vertical search website yaphon.com and integrated it into tootoo.com. In addition, Ninetowns acquired a stake in 21food.cn. While making the acquisitions, Ninetowns have been constantly enlarging its B2B resources.
