關於computer vision的會議及vision guys
注:我上次在轉載Zhihua Zhou的帖子時候補充說明了cv的會議,現在擴展成一篇長文.
衆所周知, computer vision(cv) 存在ICCV/CVPR/ECCV三個頂級會議, 它們檔次差不多,
都應該在一流會議行列, 沒有必要給個高下. 有些us的人認爲ICCV/CVPR略好於ECCV,
而歐洲人大都認爲ICCV/ECCV略好於CVPR, 某些英國的人甚至認爲BMVC好於CVPR.
簡言之, 三個會議差不多, 各有側重和偏好.
筆者就個人經驗淺談三會異同, 以供大家參考和討論. 三者乃cv領域的旗艦和風向標,
其oral paper (包括best paper) 代表當年度cv的最高水準, 在此引用Harry Shum的一句
話, 想知道某個領域在做些什麼, 找最近幾年此領域的proceeding看看就知道了. ICCV/CVPR
由IEEE Computer Society牽頭組織, ECCV好像沒有專門負責的組織. CVPR每年(除2002年)
都在美國開, ECCV每兩年開一次,僅限歐洲, ICCV也是每兩年一次, 各洲輪值. 基本可以保證
每年有兩個會議開, 這樣研究者就有兩次躋身牛會的機會.
就錄取率而言, 三會都有波動. 如ICCV2001錄取率>30%, 且出現兩個人(華人)各有三篇
第一作者的paper的情況, 這在頂級牛會是不常見的 (灌水嫌疑). 但是, ICCV2003, 2005
兩次錄取率都很低, 大約20%左右. ECCV也是類似規律, 在2004年以前都是>30%, 2006
年降低到20%左右. CVPR的錄取率近年來一直偏高, 從2004年開始一直都在[25%,30%].
最近一次CVPR2006是28.1%, CVPR2007還不知道統計數據. 筆者猜測爲了維持錄取paper
的絕對數量, 當submission少的時候錄取率偏高, 反之偏低, 近幾年三大會議的投稿數量全部
超過1000, 相對2000年前, 三會錄取率均大幅度降低, 最大幅度50%->20%. 對錄取率走勢

顯然, 投入cv的人越來越多,這個領域也是越來越大, 這點頗不似machine learning一直奉行
愚蠢的小圈子主義. 另外一點值得注意, ICCV/ECCV只收vision相關的topic, 而cvpr會收少量
的pattern recognition paper, 如fingerprint等, 但是不收和image/video完全不佔邊的pr paper,
如speech recognition等. 我一個朋友曾經review過一篇投往CVPR的speech的paper, 三個
reviewer一致拒絕, 其中一個reviewer搞笑的指出, 你這篇paper應該是投ICASSP被據而轉投
CVPR的. 就topic而言, CVPR涵蓋最廣. 還有一個沒有驗證過的原因導致CVPR錄取率高: 很多
us的researcher不願意或沒有足夠的經費到us以外的地方開會, 故CVPR會優先接收很多來自
us的paper (讓大家都happy).
以上對三會的分析對我們投paper是很有指導作用的. 目前的research我想絕大部分還是紙上
談兵, 必經 read paper -> write paper -> publish paper -> publish paper on top conferences and journals
流程. 故瞭解投paper的一些基本技巧, 掌握領域的走向和熱點, 是非常必要的. 避免做無用功,
選擇切合的topic, 改善presentation, 注意格式 (遵守規定的模板), 我想這是很多新手需要注意
的問題. 如ICCV2007明文規定不寫summary page直接reject, 但是仍然有人忽視, 這是相當不值得的.
paper畢竟是死的, 寫paper的人才是活的. 那麼我現在研究一下cv圈的格局, 按師承關係,
借鑑前人, 我總結a tree stucture of cv guys.
